Raised on its lees, the 2010 The Glass Chardonnay has a slightly herbaceous bouquet with some “mulchy” aromas in the background. The palate is well balanced with a touch of spice on the entry. It is nicely focused with a hint of hazelnut towards the crisp, satisfying finish. Drink now-2015.
When the indefatigable May-Elaine de Lencquesaing purchased the 128-hectare Glenelly Estate in 2003, a new chapter opened up for her upon the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. The following year, 60-hectares or red and 5-hectares of white grape varieties were planted, although it was not until 2009 that the state-of-the-art winery became operational. The first release was a Cape Blend from imported grapes and, to be honest, I remember the quality not being up to standard. However, the appointment of Luke O’Cuinneagain, who had worked at Chateau Angelus, Screaming Eagle and Rustenberg, plus the consultancy of Adi Badenhorst has had an immediate impact, and I was very impressed by these wines. She will be giving her old Deuxieme Cru a run for its money soon (and let’s not even think about comparing prices!)

Pale bright yellow. Musky nectarine, citrus fruits and brown spices on the sexy nose. Intensely flavored, broad and smooth, with a lovely light touch to the flavors of crisp apple and pear. Finishes persistent and classically dry. This is an entry-level wine from the new project of May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, former owner of Chateau Pichon-Lalande.

Clean and direct, featuring a racy edge to the peach, apple and melon notes, backed by a hint of blanched almond on the finish. Drink now. 400 cases imported.

Tasting Notes
This fresh, unoaked Chardonnay displays heady aromas of melon, citrus and ginger,
followed by bright, clean citrus and tropical fruit flavors. A lovely leesy character adds a dash of elegance and complexity.
Vineyards
The Glenelly Estate vineyards are situated on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg
mountain. Soils are predominantly oakleaf, a form of decomposed granite with a deep
layer of clay, which lends itself to making fresh, elegant and well-structured wines. Glenelly enjoys a high percentage of cooler, east facing slopes. This is unusual for Stellenbosch and allows for slower, more even ripening.
Vintage
Glenelly was lucky to escape the devastating winds and rains that affected most
Stellenbosch vineyards in the 2010 vintage. The Chardonnay crop was relatively large, but it ripened beautifully — without any rot — and was of excellent, very even quality.
Vinification and Maturation
The handpicked grapes were hand sorted and lightly crushed. They were gently pressed, and the juice was transferred to stainless steel tanks. After a period of settling, it was racked. Fermentation took place at 13°C, and the wine was kept on its lees in tank for several months before bottling.
About the Glass Collection
Inspired by antique glasses from May de Lencquesaing’s private collection, Glenelly’s Glass Collection celebrates the parallels between the art of making wine and the art of making glass. Both glass and fine wine come from poor soil, and just as the glassblower breathes life into glass, the winemaker’s love gives life to wine.
