Origin
This wine is made of grapes stemming from the best vineyards Viña San Pedro currently counts with in the Elqui Valley, which presents frank sandy and limy soils, with angular stones along the whole cross section. These vineyards have a h4 maritime influence thanks to its location, approximately 20 Km in direct line from the Pacific Ocean. Every morning, a sea-cloudiness stemming from the Elqui River, arises over the vines, remaining approximately until mid-day. Therefore, it has a cold climate, with relatively low maximum temperatures and good ventilation given the local windiness, what favours obtaining healthy grapes. The vines are trellised to a vertical shoot position and drip irrigated.
Climate
The growing season 2009 was influenced by the “La Niña” phenomenon, which was responsible for a decrease in the ocean’s temperature, what in turn produced low rainfall and high temperatures. The spring 2008-2009 presented high temperatures, but similar to a normal year, with absolute absence of frosts. Later on, temperatures continued rising and even extended until the end of April, period which also lacked of rainfall. The harvest of white varieties was made in general within the estimated dates, especially in those zones near the sea, where the maritime influence offset the high temperatures registered during the season. We obtained heavier but healthy bunches in general, which gave birth to fruity wines, with good aromatic intensity and elegance.
Harvest
The grapes were hand-picked, in 12 Kg boxes (26-lb), during the second half of March. Vineyard’s yield was 10 tons/ha.
Vinification
The grapes were sorted at a selection table, then destemmed, cooled and macerated in press during 4 to 6 hours at 8°C (46°F). The alcoholic fermentation took place with selected yeasts, and controlled temperatures between 10.5°C and 11.5° C (51°–53°F), under completely reductive conditions.
