Winemaker Notes
This single-vineyard bottling is made from the estate’s most prized parcel and is 100% Sangiovese. It sees malolactic fermentation in barrique with some micro-oxygenation. Afterwards, it’s aged 14-16 months in 60% new barriques. The name and label recall Giovanni d’Orsi’s father and son, both named Vincenzo.
Our Don VincEnzo is the supreme expression of Chianti Classico and it’s 100% of Sangiovese. Don Vincenzo evolved as a dream of the producer to balance the power of the Sangiovese grape and the refined elegance of Chianti Classico. Made from a best selection of a single vineyard, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in French oak barriques. After aging 16 months in barrique and 6 months in French oak barrels, wine is then bottled, spending in there 12 months before being released.
Fattoria Casaloste is located in the Chianti hills in the famed Panzano in Chianti, in Greve near Florence. It extends across about 19 hectares, of which 10.5 are planted to Sangiovese. They produce about 60,000 bottles of wine per year. Owned by Giovanni Battista d’Orsi, an agronomist and enologist, he oversees all winemaking personally, from harvest to bottling (on-site) to ageing in French-oak casks.
Casaloste uses exclusively organic methods of farming and is certified by ICEA (Istituto per la Certificazione Etica ed Ambientale), an Italian organic-farming association and regulatory entity. They firmly believe that wine, and especially Chianti Classico, is essentially a living thing and, like all living things, needs love to survive. To this end, Giovanni d’Orsi has made it his life’s pursuit to produce sublime Chianti. Casaloste is his only property and he lives there with his wife Emilia and family. Winemaking is his only profession. Because of this dedication, the winery can ensure dependable, long-term quality and stability.
It shows a very bright character with a dark-ruby colour. Its elegant and soft bouquet has plenty of spices and notes of cacao, tobacco and toasted coffee on the finish. Its elegant taste is supported by low acidity and well balanced tannins and a long, long finish. As for its complexity, it expresses it best if you drink it alone, but it is able to give you special sensations if served with well prepared red meat.
