Wine Advocate 95 Points

A glass-coating opaque purple color, it is already displaying a complex aromatic array of sandalwood, smoke, espresso, lavender, Asian spices, and assorted blue and black fruits. Smooth-textured, succulent, and structured, it will evolve for 2-3 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2028+. In the scheme of things, it offers great value in top-flight Ribera del Duero.

Bodegas y Vinedos Aalto is a partnership between legendary vigneron Mariano Garcia and Javier Zaccagnini, former President of the governing body of the Ribera del Duero DO. Aalto is sourced from 7 different villages on a variety of soils with vineyard age ranging from 40-100 years and was aged for 24 months in French and American oak.95

Tasting Notes
This wine’s elegance and fruitful presence perfectly displays the vintage’s Atlantic influence. In the nose, it offers freshness and a sharp minerality highlighting its complexity. On the palate, you experience excellence structure that is both round and sweet, with silky and persistent tannins, perfectly merged with the acidity and alcohol. It's a complex and long wine that keeps its presence in the mouth, exhibiting a wide range of flavors. Wonderful aging potential, especially after its third year in the bottle, and might be better when decanted before consumption. Pairs well with game, roasted lamb, stews and mature cheeses.

Winemaker Notes
It is ironic that one of the youngest properties in the region has one of the most prestigious lineages, but it is the case with Bodegas Aalto. A chance meeting between Mariano Garcia, former star winemaker of Vega Sicilia, and Javier Zaccagnini, former President of the governing body of the Ribera del Duero AOC, gave birth to this quality-oriented estate which produced its first vintage in 1999, a year after its creation.

The winery has acquired some of the best vineyards in Ribera del Duero, including 32 hectares in 3 different sub-regions of Ribera del Duero -- two in the province of Valladolid and one in the province of Burgos. They also have 10 hectares of 60 year- old vines in the Burgos village of Quemada. In 2004, Mariano Garcia was recognized by Wine & Spirits Magazine as one of "50 Most Influential Winemakers."
